How to Travel to the Isle of Wight

Travel Options

The most common way for people to get to the Isle of Wight is by plane or train via Portsmouth Harbour. There are plenty of airlines that fly into the airport and regular trains running from London. I recommend National Express if you’re coming by train and Ryanair if you’re flying.

There’s also a ferry service from Southampton port which has connections in Portsmouth and Lymington, but this option is more expensive than the other ways because it includes crossing the water twice and cost about £50-£70 for a return ticket.

ISLE OF WIGHT TRANSPORT

For those who are travelling without a car, there are plenty of different ways that they can get around the island, depending on what their plan is. If they’re not going to be staying and exploring for a few days then it’s worth catching the bus because of how cheap it is.

It takes about 90 minutes to drive from Ryde on the north of the island to Bembridge in the south, but I recommend stopping at some places along the way for photos. There are many turnoffs where you can see amazing coastal views, so make sure you pull over whenever there is a safe place to park your car or van. Some beaches have parking available too if you want to walk down and enjoy an afternoon relaxing in the sun!

There are also buses that run from town-to-town which cost around £5 each way if you book online in advance with the Wightlink car ferry which is a popular way to travel. There is a bus stop close by the port where you can catch a bus from Ryde and it will drop you off in town.

CONCLUSION

The Isle of Wight is one of my favourite places because there’s always something new to see when I visit. There are plenty of things that I haven’t done yet like kayaking or paddle boarding which I hope to do next time I visit. If you’re planning a visit anytime soon then I recommend taking your own transport.

Otherwise, you can catch public transport around the island using their regular bus service. There’s also a tram that runs from Ryde to the town of Shanklin which you can catch using their service.
